ーStatement:
This exhibition begins with three artists exchanging Scraps of words—small, unfinished shards that act like a compass pointing across a blank map. Entrusting this first step to another may unsettle one’s authorship, yet it also opens the work to unexpected voices. Inspired by Andy Warhol, who found ideas in casual conversations, the artists embrace noise and the presence of others within their act of painting. These Scraps, incomplete when exchanged, gain form through expression, coming alive as works of art. (*summary)
Exchange Scraps
I created three works based on the scraps of words I received from other artists. The piece on the far left was made in response to the word “contrast”— a new work painted as a counterpart to one I created two years ago. The central piece came from the word “Japaneseness,” and depicts a deep stainless-steel bathtub, once popular in the Showa era of Japan and praised for its heat retention. Interestingly, it seems I had slightly misinterpreted the meanings of these words, and that very slippage proved fascinating to me.
